Puppy Mill Survivor“Bella” - 5 years, Golden RetrieverPhoto by Marian Brickner I was rescued from a puppy mill in 2007. When I got to my new home at Thanksgiving, I crawled along on my tummy and could not stand up straight. When I went outside to go potty, I'd run to the corner shaking if a human was anywhere around. Over the last two months, I have improved. I am happiest when it is a sunny day and I'm outside by myself, walking around the yard (I now walk tall outside!). At first I'd walk in constant circles, but over time, I was learning to stop to sniff and was breaking my circle habit. One day I even rolled in the grass! My "Mom" said I was like a baby and with her watching me take my first steps. Mom was overjoyed when she saw me rolling around in the grass and called several people with the news saying that I was acting like a Golden with no cares! Now, it is a challenge to get me in the house. I'm so happy when outside and my personality comes shining through when I play "keep away" as a ploy not to come in. Mom's helper, "Daisy", a Golden, runs along side of me and guides me to a corner where Mom is finally able to leash me and then take me into the house. I always cower when the leash is attached. In the house, I'm learning very slowly. I dart around, confused and afraid in a hunched position, until I find my favorite dog bed and then I will lie down for hours, the whole time watching my family and the Goldens. I'm starting to learn that they are not to be feared. I love to be brushed as the family lies with me, petting and gently talking to me. I am now more comfortable and will even close my eyes and relax. This is a big step. I still have a long way to go and progress is slow. You see, my spirit had been broken. I know that with time and love, I will open up like a rose. I am a beautiful Golden and when I'm happy, my eyes twinkle and I walk with confidence with my head held high!
