Missouri Puppy Mills - Oprah and Beyond

Oprah presented the nationwide shame of puppy mills on her TV show. Now learn about the “puppies-for-profit” industry in Missouri, the Puppy Mill Capital of the Country.

An important public forum brought to you by Operation SPOT in cooperation with the Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation.

What: A free public forum about commercial dog breeding in Missouri, which has the highest number of “puppy mills” in the country. The program features a showing of the Oprah program on puppy mills followed by a presentation by:

• Kim Townsend, founder of PetShopPuppies.org and NoPuppyMills.com
• Bob Baker, Investigator, ASPCA
• John Coffman, Legislative Director, Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation
• Julie Leicht, Executive Director, Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation
• Presentations will be followed by a Question and Answer period with experts.

Why: To inform the public about the extent of commercial dog breeding in Missouri; the role of pet shops in keeping these breeders in business; the fate of the dogs at these facilities; what the public can do to make sure these facilities are regulated to ensure the health and welfare of the puppies and the breeding dogs.

The Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation is a non-profit lobbying organization founded in 1990 to bring about protection for animals through legislative means and is the only such organization lobbying exclusively for animal welfare issues in Missouri.

The group was instrumental in passing the Animal Care Facilities Act of 1992 and the citizen's ballot initiative that outlawed cockfighting in Missouri in 1998. The Alliance works with other humane organizations, agencies and individuals across the state toward enactment and strengthening of animal welfare laws.
